24 hours left: bid for a rare photo and help bushfire victims
Australian marathon swimming sensation, 31-time English Channel swimmer Chloë McCardel, is hosting a Bushfire Auction.
“The highest bidder can own a piece of history and support the Victorian Premier’s Bushfire Appeal,” she says. “One hundred per cent of the proceeds goes to the Appeal.”
Being auctioned is an autographed photograph circa 1875 of Captain Matthew Webb via an online charity auction.

Captain Matthew Webb was the first recorded person to swim the English Channel for sport without the use of artificial aids. In 1875, Webb swam from Dover to Calais in less than 22 hours. This brought him great celebrity, and he performed many stunts in public. He died trying to swim the Whirlpool Rapids below Niagara Falls, a feat declared impossible.
Helping fire victims
“The catastrophic fires in Australia have killed dozens of people, including firefighters, devastated communities with thousands of homes lost, razed 25 million acres, left one billion animals dead, and destroyed much of the habitat for those still living,” says McCardel.
“I wish to support those in need and we need your help to raise the most funds possible.”

Where do the funds go?
100 per cent of proceeds go to the Bendigo Bank Community Enterprise Foundation who are partnering with The Victorian Government and The Salvation Army to establish an appeal, with 100 per cent of donated funds going directly to communities in need.
An Advisory Panel, chaired by former Victorian Deputy Premier Pat McNamara, will consider and recommend where the funds are distributed.
