Good winter shows positive signs for pool industry

September 10th, 2014

WinterPoolDAsA comparison of reported pool DAs from Cordell during the three winter months of June, July and August shows an improvement of eight per cent for 2014 over 2013.

NSW showed the biggest improvement with 29 per cent more reported DAs, while SA (+19 per cent) and Queensland (+14 per cent) also showed bigger numbers. Victoria was down 4 per cent and WA down 11 per cent.

As we religiously remind readers, this DA data is not comprehensive and is only meant to offer a trend indication. The reported numbers are likely to be considerably lower than the actual number of pools being constructed – look to the disclaimer for more information. However, the manner in which both the 2013 and 2104 numbers were collated is similar, so the comparison is worth considering.

Combined with anecdotal evidence of improvements in the market and expectations of a warm el nino summer,  the overall outlook for the upcoming season is positive.

Disclaimer: While these figures give an indication of the way the market is trending, they are not comprehensive and don’t include all pools built or even all DAs lodged. By some estimates, the total national numbers including all types of pools could be as much as double these figures. They do not include pool projects that are approved as part of a new home, smaller projects under the cost threshold, renovations that don’t require a DA, or some aboveground pools. Additionally, not all councils are forthcoming with data; councils in some states such as Queensland and Victoria are particularly reluctant.
