Pool service, retail and construction continue, but public pools close in 14-day Sydney lockdown

June 27th, 2021

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has put the greater Sydney metropolitan area into lockdown for 14 days, including the Blue Mountains, the Central Coast, Wollongong and Shellharbour. The lockdown is expected to finish at midnight on Friday, July 9.

SPASA Australia COO Spiros Dassakis has been in contact with the Services NSW to confirm what constitutes an “essential service” and who is an “essential worker”, as the terms have not been properly defined by the government and in part determine who can work during this time.

From these discussions and from information included in a recent health order, he offers the following advice:

Pool and spa servicing can continue if this is your primary business function and you are unable to work from home. Deliveries can also continue when delivered to the home of a consumer.

Maintenance of swimming pools and spas in accordance with Australian Standards by an experienced industry provides a contact free “essential service” during restrictions by preventing the transmission of infectious diseases, helping maintain community health and ensuring public safety.

Pool shops may remain open. According to the recently released government gazetted health order, pool shops are not included for closure. Click and collect as well as delivery services are also able to continue operating.

Pool and spa construction can continue if this is your primary business function and you are unable to work from home. Unlike renovations to the actual house, swimming pool and spa construction occurs away from the house in the backyard where there is no contact or interaction between workers and homeowners.

Dassakis says he would like to thank the swimming pool and spa industry for continuing to be covid alert and compliant with all safety protocols. He suggests SPASA Australia members, if approached and questioned during this lockdown while carrying out above essential services, contact him on 0449 065 841.
