Uproar over lifeguard assault at Melbourne aquatic centre

January 22nd, 2025

Victoria Police have release images of the alleged perpetuators of an attack on a swimming pool lifeguard in the southeast Melbourne suburb of Narre Warren.

Casey Crime Investigation Unit detectives are searching for the eight youths after a young lifeguard was allegedly assaulted at the Casey Aquatic Recreation Centre. After the alleged assault the youths fled the scene and were last spotted heading along Overland Drive, according to the police. Victoria Police are seeking community assistance in identifying them.

The 19-year-old lifeguard was patrolling the pool at 5:50pm on Sunday when he was allegedly approached by a group of teenagers and assaulted.

Victoria Police say the group, perceived to be of Middle Eastern appearance, reportedly began bashing, kicking and headbutting the lifeguard, leaving his uniform covered in blood.

According to reports from 9News, the lifeguard previously spoke to the group about performing dangerous stunts, including flips, near other swimmers.

The lifeguard was transported to Dandenong Hospital with minor injuries, including cuts and bruises, and has since been discharged.

Security has been increased at the centre in response to the incident.

Anyone with any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au

Keep Your Cool at the Pool

Last year, there were more than 2000 incidents of abuse, violence and aggression directed at staff working in aquatic facilities around Australia.

To support the safety and wellbeing of staff working in aquatic facilities, Royal Life Saving Australia (RLSA) has launched the Keep Your Cool at the Pool campaign, which sets clear behavioural expectations for patrons and calls for users of aquatic facilities to treat each other and staff respectfully.
