June 3rd, 2014

May pool DA numbers show a continuing trend towards better times.

While they only show an overall increase of one per cent compared with May 2013, it is the fourth month in a row that has shown a rise.

NSW showed the biggest rise with a 36 per cent jump, with Victoria going up 10 per cent.

The other states showed declines.

The figures show Queensland down in particular by 38 per cent. However, this information may not be accurate, as it is known the Queensland councils are reluctant to hand over DA data, and the result is in conflict with Watertight data from SPASA Queensland. That data is based on pools proceeding through SPASA Queensland members shows an increase of 30 per cent for May, and an overall increase of 87 per cent over the past 12 months. This is compared with DA data showing Queensland is up by 13 per cent over the past 12 months.

SPLASH! will bring more information on these issues starting with the June print version of the magazine.

These figures give a valuable indication of the way the market is trending. However, they are not comprehensive and don’t include all pools built or even all DAs lodged. For example, they do not include pool projects that are approved as part of a new home, smaller projects under the cost threshold, or renovations that don’t require a DA. Also, not all councils are forthcoming with data; councils in some states such as Queensland and Victoria are particularly reluctant.
