YMCA minding Cook + Phillip

October 20th, 2010

The City of Sydney has appointed the YMCA to temporarily operate the Cook + Phillip Park Aquatic Centre.

AusLeisure Pty Ltd, who has managed the aquatic centre under contract from the City of Sydney since 1999, appointed an administrator in February. The contract was terminated by mutual agreement. The council said the YMCA, who currently operates the Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre in Ultimo, will run the centre on an interim basis.

The council says this is a good outcome for the community as it means not only will the centre remain open, but the YMCA has agreed to offer all existing staff new positions. This arrangement will remain in place while the council tenders for a new operator. The City of Sydney owns both pools but the daily operations are managed by external companies under contract.

The council is currently undertaking a $10m repair and upgrade of Cathedral Square and Cook + Phillip Aquatic Centre to make the surrounding area more pedestrian friendly and replace the pool’s waterproofing membrane.
